Red Rose Bulletin - May 2022

Red Rose Bulletin - May 2022

Hello everyone,

The year is racing by at quite a pace and I can’t believe I am already writing the May bulletin!

The car season is now well and truly underway and here at Red Rose we have been out about in our cars enjoying the spring sunshine.

HOLD THE FRONT PAGE! IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT TATTON!

The closing date for requesting tickets for Tatton is Sunday 1st May!

Bernard will be sending in the Red Rose entry form on Monday 3rd May so if you have not yet requested a ticket and would like one then please email bernard.hayward@outlook.com before Monday 2nd May (for more details please read further on in the bulletin).

A separate flyer with full details of the event will be posted on Facebook and emailed out to all Red Rose members, it will also be on the TR Resister website.

APRIL ROUND UP

Our April meeting had an unexpected and vey last minute change of venue!

The night before the meeting it was brought to our attention that the Cock @ Budworth was closed for renovation! No one had let us know about this or the fact that the pub now has a new tenant.

Not to be deterred Richard and Sian Chandler began to try and source another venue for our meeting. Thankfully our old haunt The Antrobus Arms, which also has new management came to the rescue and we didn’t have to hold the meeting in a car park which was the last resort plan. Many thanks to Richard and Sian for all their help.

The meeting was actually very well attended and it was nice to see all the TR’S in the Antrobus Arms car park once again.

Jonathan gave updates on upcoming events and a brief synopsis of the GL meeting where the Register launched their 5 year plan.

He also hinted at some of the changes that could be on the way for the Register including a change of name! When asked many people don’t actually realise we are a car club and presume we are in fact somewhere to register their TR!

Food for thought indeed and as the eagle eyed amongst you may have spotted, TS2 is already showing a possible new name amongst all the other livery that is adorning it at the moment! Sometimes though less is more!

The rescheduled AGM is due to take place on Sunday 8th May and all members are invited to register and attend this online event when you can find out more about the 5 year plan and the changes that could be in store.

There was also news of the new European Breakdown App. This is very impressive and the team behind it are to be commended. All the information on what it is and how-to use it can be found on the TR Register website.

We also decided to combine our June meeting with The Antrobus Car Run ( for further details please read the bulletin till the end) You know you want to!

We rounded things off with the raffle and an update for those doing The Coast to Coast trip in October before setting off on a run to Lowes Farm Shop which was kindly organised by Carole and Mike Biddulph.

After a very pleasant run through the countryside we had a wander round the garden centre and gift shop before the inevitable coffee and cake in the very nice café . Most of us purchased items from the farm shop which was very reasonable compared to some I have visited.

Following the meeting I spoke to the new tenant at The Cock @ Budworth who explained that the pub had been due to reopen the week before with another tenant but they pulled out at the last minute and he had stepped in and taken over without access to the diary so was unable to contact us.

The good news is they are still happy for us to hold our meetings in the function room although it is no longer a Holt pub they only own the building and as such there is now a new more pricey menu not dissimilar to prices at The Antrobus Arms.

I am told most of the original staff have been kept on and the room we use has the bar up and running which will be good. All we can do is give it a go and see how things work out. Fingers crossed we can carry on as we have been.

Drive It Day

After thinking we may have to forgo a run this year the day was saved by John and Jane Leleu who stepped in at the 11th hr and organised a run to Hack Green Secret Nuclear Bunker.

A very enjoyable day was had by all, driving some lovely roads and lanes from our meeting point at Blakemere to our first stop at the Chapel tea rooms at Pontcysyllte.

We then carried onto the The Secret Bunker at Hack-Green. After a look round at what was a very interesting and thought provoking place there was just time for a brew before we headed to the Tigers Head at Norley for a Sunday Roast. Thanks once again to John and Jane for the organising the day for us.

RHUG TO BODNANT GARDENS RUN 29TH MAY

Richard and Sian Chandler are organising a run to Bodnant Gardens on 29th May.

To avoid overcrowding during Bodnant’s peak season, they have introduced a mandatory pre-booking system.

Group bookings have to be booked and paid for in advance and as this would not be practical we are proposing that anyone wishing to join us go online on 13th May when tickets for the 29th will be released and book their own tickets at www.nationaltrust.org.uk/bodnant-garden (scroll down to “Book Your Tickets”) NT members still need to book a ticket non-NT members need to book and pay.

To make the most of the gardens, we aim to leave Rhug (LL21 0EH) at 10.30 and arrive about 1 hour 40mins later.

It promises to be a fantastic, if quite long day with a spectacular route followed by one of the UK’s best gardens bar none.

If you would like to join us on the run please email Richard Chandler at richardnchandler11@gmail.com once you have booked your ticket so he knows who is coming and can send you further details.

We will also post a flyer and further details on the Facebook page and the TR Register website nearer the time.

Tatton Park Classic Car Spectacular 4th- 5th June

Anyone wishing to attend Tatton this year should email Barnard Hayward bernard.hayward@outlook.com and we would ask that you only ask for a ticket if you intend to go. There has been a good response so far and there are still spaces available but the closing date for tickets is Sunday 1st May.

Over the last few years the number of ticket requests has been high but then attendance has been poor hence the fact that each year we are allocated a smaller and smaller space in an increasingly less desirable location.

If you do attend this year though you are in for a treat! In honour the Queens Platinum Jubilee the organisers have asked us to dress our stand on the Sunday with some patriotic flags and bunting. I am planning on wearing a crown!

We are also proposing to do an afternoon tea for Red Rose members in honour of the occasion ( further details to follow).

Antrobus Car Run Sunday 12th June

We have received the email below from the organiser of this event and can now confirm that we will combine this with our monthly meeting and you are welcome to join us for all or part of the event .Please email us if you weren’t at the April meeting and would like to go on the run so I can update the organisers on numbers This is always a great event and weather permitting it would be nice to get together at the end for a picnic as a group:

We have been working on plans for the 2022 Car Run. As you know it is on SUNDAY 12 JUNE.

We are trying the later start and pub lunch again this year - but with a twist! As it has proved hard to find a pub to work with for lunch and a concours on a Sunday, we have decided on a circular run, starting and ending in Antrobus.

The plan will be to register at Antrobus Village Hall between 11 to 11.15 am, collecting your printed run, leave about 11.15am and enjoy the run. You can then:

EITHER bring a picnic and enjoy it on the field by the cars and the Village Hall. There will be toilets available but no indoor facilities in the event of inclement weather.

OR book a table for lunch at the Antrobus Arms direct with them. Their online booking system and sample menus are at www.antrobusarms.co.uk. The Arms can seat about 66 indoors and have some outside tables too. They know we will be booking and all tables are free at present. I think we will be back about 1pm. The run will as usual be about 60 miles - and we know some of you take short cuts- so you will need to judge a safe booking time!

We will have a concours judging at the Village Hall about 3pm. We will have 3 classes - Pre War, Post War and Sports Car (any age). There will be prizes........very kindly donated by some participants for the 2020 Run that never happened!

We have previously raised funds for Village projects through the Run. This year we are asking for a donation of £5 for the run (more if you want) to raise funds for PAPYRUS. This Warrington based charity (www.papyrus-uk.org) is dedicated to suicide prevention and promotion of positive mental health and emotional wellbeing in young people. After the impact of the pandemic on young people this seems a worthy cause. Cash would be simplest please.

TS2 Round Britain tour 23rd-25th June

The intention is to cover the full region to provide everyone an opportunity to join in. To achieve this we are proposing to start in the South on Thursday, the middle of the region on Friday and finishing in the North on Saturday. The proposed itinerary is as follows.

Proposed itinerary

Thursday 23rd June

We will be collecting TS2 from North Wales group on the 23rd June and we are hoping to then have a venue / meeting point (possibly The Cock @ Budworth) where members can come and have the opportunity to take the car out on a short run in the local area.

Friday 24th June

It is hoped that we can arrange a run that would incorporate some of the original “1954 RAC British International Rally” which resulted in TR2’s sweeping the board with overall 1st, 2nd and 5th place finishes, winner in the Ladies class, stage winners at Blackpool and Hastings and top three places in sports car class up to 2.6lts. Not a bad result! The intention is to recreate some of the route through Lancashire with a stop off point and a second opportunity for members to take TS2 out for a short run.

If anyone can help us to track down one of original routes through Lancashire can you please get in touch.

Saturday 25th June We hand TS2 over to Cumbria group and the plan is to do a run to the Lakeland Motor Museum where we will then hand TS2 over and you will have a chance to look around the museum. For those who have not been before it is well worth a visit!

Coast to Coast 7th-9th October

All those who signed up should now have had details on how to book the accommodation and further details will be available nearer the time.

France trip ( date TBC)

Ann and John Thorp are moving forward with this trip and I believe a meeting has already taken place for those who are hoping to go. if you would like more details then please email john.ann.thorp.tr@uwclub.net
