Social Scene Report - TR Action 308

TR Action 308

Publication date: 27th August 2018

Hi All,

Typically for most of the rest of the country, the summer so far (towards the end of July) has been fabulous with lots of opportunities to show off our cars. For example there have been plenty of fêtes and carnivals in the villages of Derbyshire who had set space aside to welcome classic cars as part of their festivities, and a good many classic car shows too. Scenery-wise, the heather on the Derbyshire hills and moors is beginning to turn purple, so hopefully it has not been too dry to limit the extent of flowering of the heather. Probably too much to hope; it will be difficult to match the magnificent purple moorland panoramas resulting from the damp summer of last year.

In terms of activity, Derbyshire Dales members have been out and about. We haven't had a Sunday Run since the Derbyshire Dales Weekend at the beginning of June, with our next run being scheduled just after the deadline for this Social Scene contribution. However, we had good attendance at June's club night at The Amber Hotel, Oakerthorpe, where we were pleased to welcome two new attendees who we hope will be joining the Register; we had two cars on the TR Tours trip to the Spanish Pyrenees;Derbyshire Dales bods seemed to inveigle themselves into every other Group's BBQs at the IWE in Lincolnshire; we had one car (a Porsche) at the Le Mans Classic; and two or three cars (I think) at the Yorkshire Dales Weekend. Our Wednesday evening BBQ in July was delayed a day so that all who wanted could watch the England match, thus this happened on the Thursday with free burgers for members and luscious brownies and cakes (so I am told) all round courtesy of Maggie Sloss.

We had yet another good turnout for the Silverstone Classic. Here Darren Salmon had problems in the crush to watch the evening performance of UB40 – he being somewhat vertically challenged. Two burly but obliging gentlemen in front lent assistance (see photograph), although Wendy, equally vertically challenged, declined the offer of elevation. It seems that she is not that much of a UB40 fan.

We also had two cars at the Deutschlandtreffen (German Meeting) in Wiesloch, nr Stuttgart. Of particular note is that, by repute, for the first time in ten years, Alan W's diesel TR6 conversion actually made it home from a continental meeting on its own steam without the aide of a car transporter. Further rumour has it that on this year's trip to the 'States he has acquired another six with the intention of repatriating this back home so that he can begin a rebuild based on an EFI conversion. More anon.
