Thames Valley Social Scene No. 306

Thames Valley Group – Social Scene Traction 306

Neil Pinto writes: Finally some warm weather has arrived, just in time for "Drive It Day" on 22nd April. This year it was organised by the Goodwood Group, and some 15 cards from TVG participated, forming two convoys led by Alan Warburton and Mervyn Rogers.Dave (our new GL) and Janet Goswell attended in Janet's mini as his TR was out of action, having a new dashboard fitted. The destination was Parnham House, near to Storrington in Sussex.

Warm sunshine made for a great day, and we saw a first outing for Geraldine (Alan Charlwood's Car), albeit suffering from a misfire.Alan Warburton also had a slight mishap when he went down a seriously deep pothole in order to avoid some cyclists (is there a moral here?).At the time of writing it is not clear the extent of the damage caused, but Alan was able to continue and to drive home.He reported that his TR4A jumped nearly a foot into the air!Following our hard winter, the roads in our part of the world seem to be in a particularly bad state with limited evidence of local authorities doing much to effect repairs.According to a survey undertaken by Cycling UK, Surrey is the worst county in the UK for potholes, having more than double the number of current potholes not mended than Hampshire – the next worst county. So much for the "soft south"!Whilst the suspension on our TRs is hard, I guess that it's not as bad as for those on push bikes!

We have a number of events coming up – firstly our annual run in commemoration of Tim Harding on Thursday 31 May , followed by the Ripley Vintage, Veteran & Classic Vehicle Meet on 21 July and the Cranleigh Lions Classic Car Show & Autojumble on 12 August.Dave Goswell also noted that there is a regular Classic Car and Curry evening on the fourth Thursday of every month from 18:00 until 21:30 at the Westerham Brewery Tap Room & Shop Beggars Lane, Westerham, Kent, TN16 1QP.

Just in case there is an impression we limit our fun to TRs, the enclosed photo shows our erstwhile GL driving Bob's Hillman Aero Minx at one of our regular monthly Sunday meetings. It very much looks as if he is enjoying himself!

Our regular meetings are: The Abinger Hatch on the second Wednesday of each month from 20:00, with the main meeting from 12:00 at The Surrey Oaks on the last Sunday. We're a friendly bunch and new members are always welcome. Please see TR Register website for more information www.tr-register.co.uk/thamesvalley.
